Satguru Jagjit Singh’s nephew Thakur Uday Singh (54) was on Friday named the administrative head of the Namdhari sect.
Soon after the Satguru’s cremation at Bhaini Sahib, 35 km from here, on Friday, HS Hanspal, a sect follower and former Punjab Congress president, made this announcement on behalf of Satguru’s widow Mata Chand Kaur.
When asked about handing over of the “guru gaddi” to Uday Singh, Hanspal replied in the negative. “He (Udai Singh) would not be called Satguru, but would perform all duties in the capacity of the sect head,” Hanspal added.
On whether a consensus had been reached on Uday Singh’s succession, Hanspal said, “There is no consensus yet. We have made the announcement on the orders of Mata Chand Kaur.” Uday Singh is the son of Veer Singh, younger brother of the Satguru. Born at Bhaini Sahib in 1958, he spent his childhood in Haryana’s Sirsa district, where he completed his schooling and higher studies.
Later, he founded Namdhari Seeds Private Limited, which went on to become the largest exporter of hybrid vegetable seeds and flowers in India. A former hockey player, he is the incharge of the Namdhari Hockey Federation and chairman of the management committee of SPS Apollo Hospital, Ludhiana.
Uday Singh’s wife Gursharan Kaur lives in Bangalore. His daughter, Ujjal Kaur, recently completed graduation in agricultural sciences from the US, while son Uttam Singh is doing graduation there in the same stream.
