The construction of an international-level multi-purpose sports stadium coming up at Sector 78 here will be completed by the end of this month, said a district official on Monday.
The stadium, which is yet to be named, will have an Olympic-size swimming pool, hockey and football fields, a table tennis hall, gymnastics hall, badminton court, boxing ring, wrestling ring and an athletics track.
Deputy commissioner Tejinderpal Singh Sidhu on Monday said the stadium, built at a cost of Rs 19.3 crore, will be ready to host national and international events in the near future. "Final touches are being given to the wood works and installation of required sports infrastructure," he said.
He added that the Punjab government aimed at developing the district as the sports hub of the state with the twin purpose to create facilities to host important sporting events and provide world-class infrastructure to budding sportspersons. He said that six more international-level sports stadiums were being constructed in the city at a cost of Rs 66 crore to boost sporting activities in the region. The stadium will also have a synthetic-turf lawn tennis court for competitive events.
The stadium will also have a hostel and a residential complex to provide accommodation to 200 players and coaches. Sidhu said the indoor stadium would be flood-lit and on the pattern of stadiums hosting Olympic Games.
