The residents of Sector 40 are waiting for the reopening of post office in their area for the past seven years. The members of welfare association, MIG-1 houses, Sector 40, said to cater to the postal needs of Sector 40, which was one of the most populous sectors of the city and the adjoining sectors and villages, a sub-post office had been functioning since 1989 in a rented house of Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB).
The Chandigarh division of the postal department and CHB were engaged in a bitter battle more than five years ago in which the latter forcibly vacated the post office resulting in its closure on July 19, 2006. Both the departments have been shooting off letters between themselves ever since the CHB vacated the post office.
Almost more than seven years after the sub-post office functioning from the sector was closed down, the authorities are dilly-dallying on the re-opening of the post office, much to the inconvenience of people.
SK Khosla, general secretary of association, said on January 4, 2007, when the then UT administrator General SF Rodrigues (retd) was inaugurating an e-sampark centre in Sector 40, he categorically told the gathering that a post office would be reopened shortly. It is pertinent to mention that there is no other post office in Sector 40, 39, 38,38 West and 37 alongwith villages and colonies and in this part of the city.
