Even as the UT SSP is working hard to create awareness among city youngsters against eve-teasing, two youths shamed the city by harassing a student from Uganda in the wee hours of Tuesday. Acting swiftly, the police arrested the two within hours.

It all started at 2.30am on Tuesday when Zainab Hussain (23) was walking down to her home with her friend Hamis in Sector 40. Two boys Karan (19) and Mandeep (20) allegedly started following the two while passing comments. Zainab complained that the two boys tried to touch her while they passed them by. She added they almost tried to pull her towards themselves. At this, Hamis intervened and asked the boys not to follow them.

Zainab said the boys started pelting stones at them. "We rushed towards my rented accommodation in Sector 40, but the two followed us. They pelted stones at my room and broke a windowpane. Hamis was also hurt in the process," Zainab complained.

Zainab had come to the city last year and is pursuing BBA, while her friend Hamis has been pursuing B.Sc (IT) since 2008. The two are students at a Sector 34 institute.

Sector 39 police station SHO Charanjit Singh said: "Zainab called up 100 at about 2.50am and informed that two boys were trying to molest her and even pelted stones. The PCR reached the spot."

The SHO said Karan is a student of a college in SAS Nagar and had earlier been booked for attempt to murder and was out on bail. Mandeep is also a student. The police have booked the two boys for wrongful restraint, eve-teasing, rioting and criminal intimidation.
