Senior Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) leader and Kangra MP Shanta Kumar on Tuesday urged the railway ministry to immediately start the construction of proposed Pathankot- Manali- Leh broad-gauge rail line.

In a statement issued here, Shanta said that in the wake of the increasing activities of China on the other side of the border, the central government, in a meeting held under chairmanship of the national security advisor, had recently approved the construction of four railway lines , including Pathankot-Leh rail link connecting the border areas.

“Construction of this rail link should be declared a national project given its strategic importance,” said the BJP leader while adding that he had also met railway minister Sadanand Gowda and taken up the issue.

Shanta said he also apprised the union minister about the problems related to Pathankot-Jogindernagar narrow- gauge rail link.

He said that Pathankot is an important railway station as hundreds of foreign tourists, visiting the abode of Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama, enter the Kangra valley through this route.

“Besides, the army also moves through the route to reach its three bases located in Kangra district.

He urged the railway minister to set up an additional railway ticket reservation facility at the station and increase the frequency of Dhauladhar Express being run between Pathankot and Delhi.
