A five-year-old girl had a narrow escape when some miscreants allegedly put the shanty in which she was sleeping in on fire in Kharakmangoli here on Monday night.
The incident took place when Khushi and her brothers - Karan and Arjun - were sleeping along with their parents in their shanty in the Valmiki ghetto of Kharakmangoli slums.
"Some miscreants set our hut on fire. I woke up with the sound of the bursting of the picture tube of the television that had caught fire. The hut was filled with smoke. I came out with my sons and wife, but Khushi was left inside," said Pappu, Khushi's father who works as a daily wage labourer.
"People of the locality gathered outside. When someone asked me about Khushi, I rushed inside. The hut was full of smoke and nothing was visible. However, I found her and brought her out. It was a narrow escape for us," added Pappu, who is a native of Saharanpur district of Uttar Pradesh.
"Neighbours doused the fire with the help of water from drains and the hand pump located near the hut," said Babloo Saroha, a neighbour of Pappu.
Most of the belongings of the house got burnt in the fire.
Before putting the shanty on fire, the miscreants had set afire a motorcycle and a three-wheeler of Madan Pal, who also lives in the same ghetto. Pal runs a shop in Mauli Jagran of Chandigarh.
"The incident took place at 11.30pm. Some miscreants put the vehicles on fire and fled the spot. The police were informed at the same time. We do not know who these people are," said Pal.
"We have registered a case under Sections 435 (for mischief by fire or explosive substance) and 436 (for mischief by fire or explosive substance with intent to destroy house) of the IPC," said inspector Ajay Rana, SHO of the Sector 5 police station.
