Shimla MC hikes parking fees by 10% by adding service tax

Locals as well as tourists will now have to shell out more money for parking at lots owned by the municipal corporation as well as those contracted by the civic body to private operators within the municipal limits.A meeting of the MC general house, chaired by deputy mayor Tikender Singh Panwar, unanimously decided on Tuesday to hike parking fees in the city with immediate effect.

Locals as well as tourists will now have to shell out more money for parking at lots owned by the municipal corporation as well as those contracted by the civic body to private operators within the municipal limits.A meeting of the MC general house, chaired by deputy mayor Tikender Singh Panwar, unanimously decided on Tuesday to hike parking fees in the city with immediate effect.

"The hike is nominal - about 10% over the existing charges. This has been done as no service tax was being levied for parking earlier. After the excise & taxation department asked the civic body to deposit service taxes on parking we decided to raise parking fees by including service tax."

The parking tariff for up to six hours will be Rs 50 for small cars, Rs 60 for big cars and Rs 20 for motorcycles and scooters. The charges for up to 12 hours will be Rs 100 for small cars, Rs 120 for big cars and Rs 40 for motorcycles and scooters and, for a 24-hour period, they will be Rs 170, Rs 200 and Rs 80, respectively. The monthly parking fee for small cars will be Rs 2,500, for big vehicles Rs 3,000 and for motorcycles and scooters Rs 900.

Charges for parking vehicles in residential areas has been hiked by Rs 5.The parking tariff for up to six hours will be Rs 20 for small cars,Rs 25 for big cars and Rs 10 for motorcycles and scooters, for up to 12 hours it will be Rs 25 for small cars, Rs 30 for big cars and Rs 15 for motorcycles and scooters and, and, for a 24-hour period, it will be Rs 30, Rs 35 and Rs 20, respectively. The monthly parking fee has been raised by Rs 100, and will now be Rs 600 for small cars, Rs 800 for big cars and Rs 400 for motorcycles and scooters.

The fees for parking vehicles at designated lots along the road from 08:00 am to 08:00 pm has also been increased by Rs 5. The tariff for up to six hours will now be Rs 20 for cars and Rs 15 for motorcycles and scooters and, for a period up to 12 hours, it will be Rs 35 and Rs 20,respectively.

The house also gave its nod to set up two committees, one to oversee the MC's developmental projects works to be headed by Panwar, and the other to check unauthorized encroachments in the city.
