A mobile vendor, who was the target of a gunshot in Raipur Rani market on Wednesday afternoon, escaped unhurt as the bullet hit an aluminum frame inside the shop.
There are two mobile vendors at Trilokpur Chowk: Chabra Mobile Repair and Chabra Communication.The vendor Sumit Kumar was in his shop Chabra Communication, while his father Ahok Kumar was present at the other shop.
Sumit told the police that around 2 pm, he received an extortion call, in which the caller had demanded Rs 5 lakh. The caller had threatened that he would dire consequences if he failed to provide the money.
After 10 minutes, a youth, who was riding a motorcycle, fired at Sumit Kumar. As the passers-by and the victim were unable to comprehend the situation, the accused managed to flee, but he left behind his motorcycle and weapon.
Soon, inspector Lalit Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Raipur Rani police station reached the spot.
"Two people, Kala and Johnny, have been identified so far. Johnny was known to the complainant and he was the one who had fired at him. Teams have been sent to nab the accused and we will arrest them soon," said deputy commissioner of police (Ambala rural) Surinder Singh Bhoria.
A case under sections 384 (extortion) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code was registered at the Raipur Rani police station against the accused.
