Sidhu back-stabbed BJP in LS polls: SAD

The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday said former BJP MP Navjot Sidhu had backstabbed his party as well as ‘his mentor’ Arun Jaitley in the Lok Sabha elections by refusing to campaign in Amritsar. On Wednesday, Sidhu had said that the SAD had back-stabbed the BJP by aligning with the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) in the Haryana elections.

“It is shocking that Sidhu, who has not been honest to his own party, is trying to teach lessons to the SAD,” general secretary Maheshinder Singh Grewal said.

Grewal added that instead of resorting to cheap theatrics, the former BJP MP should clarify whether union minister Arun Jaitely was his mentor in politics or not and if so, why he did not campaign for him in Amritsar.
“Sidhu should explain why he back-stabbed his political guru, Jaitley, when he needed him the most,” Grewal said. Jaitley lost the Lok Sabha elections to Capt Amarinder Singh of the Congress in Amritsar.

Grewal also accused Sidhu of playing a “selfish and self-centered style of politics”.

“We always stood by our friends and allies and that is why we are contesting the assembly elections in league with the INLD in Haryana. Sidhu is a new entrant in politics but even he should know that the SAD has been a traditional ally of the INLD since the time of Chaudhary Devi Lal. We are only continuing in that tradition,” he added.

Taking up issues Sidhu raised at Wednesday’s Sirsa rally, Grewal claimed that there was no substance to the contention that Akalis had ensured Jaitley’s defeat from Amritsar.

He claimed Jaitley had lost most heavily in the BJP-held assembly segments in the constituency and that SAD was not responsible. “Sidhu should explain whether this was a direct result of
back-stabbing that he indulged in,” Grewal added.
