Sikri may take oath as SC judge tomorrow

The orders for his promotion cleared, Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Arjan Kumar Sikri is likely to take oath as a Supreme Court judge on Friday.


Justice Sikri had taken over as chief justice here on September 23 last year after serving as acting chief justice of the Delhi high court since October 2011.

Sources said the name of justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul, the seniormost judge of the Delhi high court, was being considered for the post of Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice. Till then, justice Jasbir Singh, the seniormost judge, will function as acting chief justice.

During his over six-month tenure as chief justice, justice Sikri has given several important judgments on public interest litigations and on cases relating to service matters. Some of them include guidelines to control and investigate crimes against women, directions to constitute children's courts, constitution of committees to probe arbitrary hike in fees by private schools and directions to the Punjab government for free treatment of acid attack victims.

Born on March 7, 1954, justice Sikri did his LLB from University of Delhi in 1977 and completed his LLM from the same university later. He got enrolled as an advocate in July 1977 with the Bar Council of Delhi and was designated as senior advocate in September 1997. He got elevated as judge of the Delhi high court on July 7, 1999.
