Punjabi singer Subhash Sharma, alias Babu Chandigarhia, was allegedly thrashed by a group of people at a marriage function on the premises of PCA Stadium, Phase 9, here on Monday evening.
The incident took place after he refused to oblige the group that asked him to sing at the marriage party. He suffered injuries on eye, forehead and leg. He was rushed to the civil hospital in Phase 6, from where he was discharged after treatment.
The police have registered a case against unidentified people.
Speaking to HT, the singer said he had gone to attend a marriage party with his family to PCA Stadium. Some persons requested him to sing a few of his songs, but he refused to oblige them. This infuriated the group and they assaulted him. The incident happened in the presence of senior Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Balwant Singh Ramoowalia, he alleged.
He said he might have been attacked as he had recently uploaded a video on YouTube titled "Akali de bhaide kamm".
Babu added that he had also told the group that he would sing later as he was busy with his family. "I also told the DJ to play my songs, but he could not find them immediately. Irked over it, 10 to 12 persons thrashed me," he added.
"Ramoowalia was also present at the wedding when the incident happened and nobody came forward to save me," Babu alleged.
Addressing a media conference, SAS Nagar SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the singer did not even approach the police after the incident.
"I personally visited his house to record his statement. We have registered a case against unidentified persons and the police are analysing the video footage of the marriage party. The accused will be arrested soon," Bhullar said.
Bhullar denied any political angle in the incident. "The incident happened due to an altercation with a group of people, who wanted Babu to sing, but he failed to oblige them," said Bhullar.
Ramoowalia admitted that he did visit the marriage function, but came back at 9.40 pm, whereas the incident happened around 11pm. "I have nothing to do with the incident," he added.
