Former Punjab finance minister Surinder Singla, convener of the state Lok Sabha elections campaign committee, on Friday asked state Congress disciplinary committee chairman GK Chatrath to withdraw the notices to senior party leaders who had voiced concern over the drubbing in the contest.

In his letter to Chatrath, a copy of which he has also sent to All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary Shakeel Ahmed, man in charge of the party affairs in Punjab, Singla wrote: “It was unfortunate that you rushed to issue show-cause notices to PPCC (Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee ) vice - presidents Rana Gurmit Singh Sodhi and Kewal Singh Dhillon, who had spoken their mind on the bad performance of the party in the Lok Sabha polls.”

“Being the convener, ”he wrote, “I had asked Sodhi to campaign in Amritsar constituency in favour of Captain Amarinder Singh and Dhillon in Anandpur Sahib for Ambika Soni; so by being there, they have not defied any discipline of the party.”

Singla has written that both Bhag Singh and Gurkanwal Kaur, members of the disciplinary committee, were not taken into confidence before the notices were issued to the 24 Congressmen.
