The Punjab government told the Punjab and Haryana high court on Friday that it has constituted a three-member special investigating team (SIT) to carry a probe into 131 illegal hotels constructed in and around the Galiara project of Golden Temple.

The SIT members are Ravi Bhagat, Amritsar deputy commissioner; Rahul Tiwari, deputy principal secretary to deputy chief minister and Sandeep Rishi, additional chief administrator, Amritsar Development Authority. After approval of names of SIT members, the division bench comprising chief justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and justice Arun Palli directed the SIT to submit action taken report by May 16.

The directions came during the hearing of a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Sarabjit Singh Verka.

The authorities, after giving personal hearing to the owners of hotels and guest houses, had granted six months’ time to 131 buildings owners to take corrective steps to confirm their buildings as per the byelaws on January 23.

These hotels and guest houses were found to have been constructed in violation of the applicable building byelaws.
