In a bid to bring transparency and curb the black marketing of fertilisers in the open market, the Punjab government has evolved an SMS system to share information regarding the distribution of fertilisers among the members of cooperative societies.
A decision to this effect was taken by the cooperation department following directions from chief minister Parkash Singh Badal for ensuring absolute transparency in fertiliser distribution.
The scheme was initially implemented on a trial basis in Muktsar, Bathinda and Jalandhar districts, where around 10,000 SMSes were sent to the members of the cooperative societies to update them about the status of the supply of fertilisers in their respective areas.
Fifty members each from nearly 4,000 cooperative societies in the state have been short-listed by the department and their relevant details forwarded to the service providers for SMS service.
Under this system, SMSes would be sent to such 70,000 members by the fertiliser distributing agencies, Markfed and Iffco, immediately after the trucks were dispatched to the societies, a spokesman here said.
