The use of social networking sites this election season has not only been an effective tool for publicity for the Lok Sabha candidates in the city, but is also “free”.
At least, the use of such websites is not adding to the election expenses of the candidates.
Besides publicity, these websites are also helping candidates take a dig at each other, but they no way are liable for it.
There are several users, supporters of different parties posting all kind of content from their personal accounts, for which any particular candidate has no accountability.
UT de puty commissioner- cum - returning officer Mohammed Shayin though maintains that the content and use of social networking sites is under scrutiny, so far neither the candidates have shared any expenses on same, nor they have been issued any notice for content on these websites.
Speaking to HT, Shayin said, “The use of social networking sites by the candidates is under scrutiny.”
“We have even asked them to provide us with content being officially posted by them. Also, the expense incurred will be checked,” Shayin added.
It has been learnt that the candidates are only responsible for their own official content on these websites.
Also, they are accountable to pay if they have hired any professional to maintain the websites, or can invite action if they themselves are posting objectionable material.
Be it Congress candidate Pawan Bansal, AAP’s Gul Panag, BJP’s Kirron Kher or BSP’s Jannat Jahan, all are extensively using the social world to reach out to voters and to woo them.
These candidates agree that they could not have had a better free tool than using internet to reach out to such a huge population.
