In an important development, Neeraj Sharma, son of Independent MLA from Faridabad NIT and Haryana labour minister Shiv Charan Lal Sharma, resigned as Block Congress Committee president of Faridabad NIT.
The Independent MLA from Faridabad NIT is among the six Independents supporting the ruling Congress at present in the state assembly.
In fact, the Congress was able to form the government in 2009 even after falling short of a simple majority due to the support of seven Independent MLAs including Sharma.
He was subsequently rewarded with a minister of state berth in the cabinet. One of the seven Independents, Gopal Kanda, an accused in Geetika Sharma suicide case, recently withdrew his support to the Congress and floated his own outfit, Haryana Lokhit Party.
Meanwhile, Neeraj Sharma, who was once an OSD to a former Jharkhand chief minister, has reportedly resigned in protest against the appointment of a working president of the Faridabad NIT Block Congress Committee before the Lok Sabha polls.
Faridabad NIT assembly segment comprises a large number of migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. “Despite the fact that I was not even informed about the decision to appoint a working president, I sincerely campaigned for the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls.
But now I am constrained to resign from the primary membership of the Congress as well from the post of block Congress committee president in view of the disastrous performance of the party in the state,” wrote Sharma in letter to Faridabad district Congress chief.
When asked whether his decision to quit the Congress will have a bearing on their support to the Congress government, Neeraj said: “That’s entirely the decision of my father. I cannot take decisions on his behalf.”
