The Punjab and Haryana high court has directed director general of police (DGP) (prisons), Haryana, Rakesk Malik to file a detailed reply stating that how many of the eight undertrails, absconding from the Sonepat jail since January, have been arrested so far.

The directions were passed during the resumed hearing of the case in which the high court had taken suo motu notice of the jail break incident. The undertrials were involved in serious offences such as murder and dacoity. The state authorities were to file their replies before the court on Monday, but it failed to do so.

The court directed the officer to state whether the facility of jammers in various jails had been made operational.

On the earlier date of hearing, the state police had informed the court that of the eight undertrials, two had been arrested.

The court was apprised that assistant superintendent of jails and four warders had been suspended and the state government had approved to file a chargesheet for major penalty against the deputy superintendent (jail).

The case will now come up for hearing on September 10.
