The 2014 assembly elections in the state will witness all the Congress heavyweights campaigning aggressively for the party candidates.
A total of thirteen rallies in the state have been proposed for the Congress president Sonia Gandhi and vice president Rahul Gandhi. Of the nine assembly seats in the Gurgaon parliamentary constituency, Sonia is likely to address a rally at Rewari in the first week of October while vice president Rahul Gandhi will address a rally at one of the three assembly constituencies of Mewat district in the second week of October.
Six rallies of the party chief Sonia and seven rallies by Rahul Gandhi are scheduled for the state — together the thirteen rallies will cover assembly seats including Ambala Cantt, Rohtek, Sonepat, Kalka, Jhajjar, Mewat and Rewari, said a party source.
The final dates will be announced later this week. Apart from Sonia and Rahul, 40 other Congress heavyweights — including Manmohan Singh, Mohammed Azharuddin, Sheila Dixit, Digvijaya Singh and Harish Rawat — will also join the poll campaign to support their candidates, a party source said.
Sonia’s rally at Rewari assembly constituency — which has been represented by the Congress candidate for the past five consecutive terms — will be her third visit to the district.
“The visit of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and other heavyweights would certainly motivate us and help party securing majority. We are leaving no stone unturned to get maximum of the 90 seats,” said a senior Congress member, adding that the state had never seen such an aggressive poll campaign in the past.
