Deputy superintendent of police (central) Ashish Kapoor said the students have been identified and would be arrested soon.
The police said Kansal resident Parkash Singh, who works as a watchman, complained that five youths came in a SUV to the inner market, Sector-8 around 2.30 am. The youths had come to paste posters in the market, to which the watchman objected. After exchange of heated words with the watchman, the youths fired three shots in the air as they were leaving the place.
The sector 3 police have registered a case of causing mischief or damage by fire or any explosive substance under section 435 of the IPC.
The DSP said two empty shells had been recovered from spot and names of the students would be made public once they are arrested. He said the police would probe into the source of the weapon and whether it was licensed.
Meanwhile, a Nayagaon resident, Gurwinder Singh alias Sonu, has been booked for defacing public property. The accused was pasting posters of SOPU at the bus stop near Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector-26.
