The education department on Sunday organised a state-wide meeting with assistant education officers (AEO), sports, to launch an anti-drug awareness campaign amongst students, especially sportsmen, by dispensing education against harmful effects of drugs, at the Sikhya Bhawan, on Sunday.

Presiding over the meeting, education minister Daljit Singh Cheema directed all AEOs (sports) to intensify the steps being taken to make students aware about adverse effects of drugs by encouraging them towards sports.

Olympian and hockey icon, and legislator Pargat Singh was the special attraction of the meeting. He chaired the special session against the negative impacts of drugs.

Singh, who assured to extend full cooperation, support and assistance from the sports fraternity of the state to make students aware about the ill-effects of drugs, asked all district education and sports officers to divide the sports in three categories-simple, specialist and super- specialist - besides launching a campaign to motivate students.

Cheema said sports officers should form district-level committees with the active participation of former Olympians and international sportspersons so that adequate steps could be taken.

Focusing on sports reforms in education, Pargat Singh urged physical education teachers to come forward to save the budding future of the nation.
He said sports activities could change the fate of the nation by channelising the energy of youth.
