A day after two teenage girls committed suicide by consuming poison after being repeatedly stalked for last three months, the police arrested an 19-year-old resident of Singhpura village, Lokesh Dalal, here on Tuesday.

The girls were worried of the social stigma of being pulled into a controversy for no fault of theirs and thought the incident of being stalked might bring disrepute to their families. They were engineering aspirants and went for coaching at an institute.

During police investigation, the accused admitted of stalking the girls and said the victims resisted his indecent proposals.

On Monday, the girls came to the coaching centre and started vomiting. They were rushed to the local medical college but died during the treatment. Police registered a case under 306 (abetment to suicide), Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act (POCSO), 34 (common intention) and 354D (Stalking) of Indian Penal Code (IPC).

Police said that one of the girls had informed the coaching centre owner, Chand Singh, about it and he subsequently had informed the girl’s father. The accused did not turn up on the two days when her father had gone to the coaching centre with her. However, no attempt to lodge a police complaint was made then.
