Members of the Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee, led by its spokesperson, Hoshiyari Lal Sharma, on Sunday protested against the hike in rail fares announced by the central government on Friday. Demanding a revision of the fares, senior leaders and workers gathered at Subash Chowk and burnt effigies of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and railway minister Sadanand Gowda.
Describing the Modi-led government's decision anti-people, Sharma said, "The multiplied freight rates would further increase the prices of necessary supplies." He added that the BJP had not fulfilled the promises made during the election campaigns.
The central government had on Friday increased the railway fares by 14.2% for all classes and freight charges by 6.5%, which would become effective from June 25.
