A furniture shop in SAS Nagar has been directed to pay Rs25,000 as compensation for harassment owing to deficient services. The district consumer disputes redressal forum SAS Nagar directed Kurali-based Vishwakarma Furniture to pay the sum to complainant Sunit Bansal, a resident of Sector 20, Panchkula, for selling poor quality furniture and failing to replace or refund its cost.

Disposing off the complaint, the consumer forum on October 29 also asked the shop owner to refund `13,600 with 9% interest from April 2013 till actual realisation, to the complainant.

Bansal had ordered for a nine-seater sofa set with cushions and covers, two pouffes, one centre table, two side tables with sandwich designer glass and a diwan on April 4, 2013.

The shop run by Anil Dhiman had assured delivery by April 20, 2013.

Bansal alleged that all the pieces except the designer sandwich glass of the centre table and side table were delivered on April 26.

Within a month, the tables' colour started fading and the wood started showing cracks and unevenness. Though he was assured of a replacement, nothing was done in spite of repeatedly calling the outlet.
The case was conducted ex parte as nobody appeared on behalf of Vishwakarma Furniture.

Consumer forum, presided over by Madhu P Singh, held, "Since Vishwakarma Furniture has deliberately avoided the proceedings, the complainant's version remains un-rebutted and is held to be reliable."
