While the poll expenditure submitted by the student bodies that contested the student council elections at Panjab University (PU) runs into few thousand, the Chandigarh police which were keeping a tabs on election expenses have a different story to tell.
As per PU records, the maximum amount spent by any party is Rs 16,680 but the police maintain that lakhs were spent during this student council elections.
The police say they have submitted a report to the university authorities that mentions freebies such as free trips, coupons to saloons, parties at clubs, alcohol and renting cars for poll campaigning.
The police say they have submitted details of Sector 34-based bus operators that took students on trips to Kasauli and Shimla. High-end cars were rented at Rs 10,000-15000, the report says.
The report also mentions that free liquor was distributed during parties arranged by different student bodies in city clubs.
Talking to Hindustan Times, deputy superintendent of police (DSP-central) Ashish Kapoor said, "We have prepared a report on the freebies extended by different student bodies during the council elections and have forwarded it to the PU authorities. We have mentioned in the report the freebies, including free trips, but ultimately it's the PU authorities that will take a call on the issue."
The expenditure details submitted with PU state that the National Student Union of India (NSUI) spent the maximum of Rs 16,680 followed by the Student Organisation of India (SOI) at Rs 16,380.
The Students for Society (SFS) spent Rs 740 for conducting the elections as per the expenditure report. Sources said the expenditure incurred will be rectified accordingly and due action will be taken.
