Irked over the imposition of house tax by UT administration, former mayor Subhash Chawla on Friday resigned from the chairmanship of house tax committee 2015. He has submitted his resignation to mayor Poonam Sharma.

Chawla said the way UT administration imposed the house tax was completely undemocratic and being an elected representative he was against the unnecessary burden being put on the residents of Chandigarh.

“I personally feel that being the chairman of the house tax committee, I was not allowed to act as per my wishes. I don’t want to be a part of the implementation process of the imposition of residential property tax,” Chawla said.

“There was no need to impose this tax, as the municipal corporation is financially sound as compared to other civic bodies of the region. I think the decision regarding imposition of any tax should be taken only with the consent of mayor, leaders of other political parties, nominated councillors and various resident welfare associations. Such issues should be discussed in the MC House first and then sent to the administration for further action.”

‘The Chandigarh administration had directed the MC to revise the residential property tax from time to time but it was never brought in my notice even as I being the chairman of house tax assessment committee,” he said.
