The storm that wreaked havoc in the region on Sunday evening claimed three lives and injured several people due to a wall collapse, road accident and uprooting of trees at many places.
As wind velocity crossed 105kmph during the storm that lasted around 45 minutes, a 21-year-old student of GGDSD College in Sector 32, Himanshu, died when a wall in the college collapsed. Himanshu, a student of BBA-3, had come to drop off his friend Piyush, a student of BSC-1 at the college hostel when the wall fell on them. Police were informed and the victims were rushed to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32 where doctors declared Himanshu brought dead while Piyush is still under treatment and is out of danger. Himanshu, who hails from Dehradun and was staying in a paying guest house, had suffered serious injuries on the head. Sources said the same wall had collapsed in the past too. Family of the deceased was informed and police started inquest proceedings. The body has been kept in the hospital mortuary and would be handed over to the family after post-mortem examination.
In the second fatal mishap in Panchkula district, a 23-year-old resident of Raipur Rani, Jatinder Kumar, lost his life after his motorcycle slipped during the storm. Police said he was not wearing a helmet and suffered head injuries. Taken to Government Hospital in Sector 6 in Panchkula, he was declared dead on arrival.
In SAS Nagar, a 30-year-old man standing under a bus shelter in Phase 7 died when the shelter collapsed under the weight of a tree that fell on it. Identified as Kamlesh Kamal, he was a native of Bihar and worked as a cook in Phase 2. He was declared brought dead at the civil hospital.
Besides, at least 100 persons were rushed to government hospitals.
GMSH-16 topped the list with 60 people receiving treatment there, while five were in the PGIMER with serious injuries and around 15 people were admitted to the GMCH-32. According to doctors at the GMSH-16, a large number of patients suffered deep cuts, bruises and fractures.
A wall collapsed in Bapu Dham Colony in Sector 26, too, but no one was injured.
