A day after the killing of notorious gangster Sukhbir Singh Kahlwan alias Sukha Kahlon, in Phagwara, in police custody, Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has ordered the dismissal of two assistant sub-inspectors and suspension of four constables, who were bringing Kahlon back to Nabha jail in a jeep after a court hearing in Jalandhar.

The deputy chief minister, while admitting a serious security lapse on the part of the cops, has also ordered the transfer of Kapurthala SSP Dhanpreet Kaur and Phagwara SP Gursewak Singh with immediate effect.

ASI Nirmal Singh and ASI Jaswinder Singh who have been dismissed were in charge of the police escort party that was bringing Kahlon back from Jalandhar.

Head constables Malkiat Singh and Mann Singh and constables Surjit Singh and Yadwinder Singh, all from Patiala police, who were part of the escort party, have been suspended and a departmental inquiry instituted against them.

Patiala IG zonal Paramjit Singh Gill, during his preliminary investigation, prima facie found lapses on part of the police party escorting Kahlon, as it had failed to resist the assailants.

In fact, about 15 assailants, who had covered their faces and gunned down Kahlon, filmed the entire act of killing and even danced around the body in the presence of the police escort party who remained mute spectators.

Gill, who is supervising the investigation, is also being assisted by the Jalandhar commissioner of police.

Gill said the main assailants had been identified and police parties dispatched to nab them. “Initial investigation shows it to be a case of an attack on Kahlon by members of a rival gang. The main assailants have old police record and had absconded while out on bail and parole,” the IG said.

Meanwhile, Ashish Chaudhary has been posted as the Kapurthala SSP and Rajeshwar Singh Sidhu as Phagwara SP.
