Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday issued strict instructions to all senior superintendents of police (SSPs) to work in tandem with the state industries department to check illegal mining, while deputy commissioners (DCs) have been told to ensure regular supply of mining material in the state.

Sukhbir said it would be the SSPs' responsibility to launch a coordinated campaign against illegal mining and initiate prosecution against the offenders as per law.

The SSPs have also been instructed to file a detailed monthly report in this regard to the deputy chief minister's office. Sukhbir said he would monitor the role of SSPs in curbing the menace of illegal mining across the state.

The deputy chief minister has also asked chief secretary Rakesh Singh to issue instructions to all deputy commissioners to check such cases and keep a watch on the availability of mining products to the public.

He said it would be the responsibility of deputy commissioners to ensure adequate supply of mining material in their respective districts.
