Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal expressed shock over the demise of ghazal maestro Mehdi Hassan, who expired Wednesday in Karachi due to multi-organ failure.

In a condolence message, Badal said Mehdi Hasan, who had millions of fans in India and Pakistan, would be remembered for bringing the ghazal to centre stage even in the age of pop music.

He said Hassan's melodious voice gave ghazal singing a new identity and due to his remarkable and unique style he was titled Shahenshah-e-Ghazal.

Expressing heartfelt sympathies with the bereaved family, Badal prayed to the Almighty for the departed soul.
