Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Badal has suspended five policemen deployed at the Phase-1 police station, including the SHO and the ASI after he found them missing from duty during a surprise check, at around 10.00pm on Thursday. During his inspection, the deputy CM found only one staff member present on duty.

Media adviser to the deputy CM Jangveer Singh said Sukhbir decided to take a round of the city, alone in a private car, and inspected the Phase-1 police station when he did not see any cop at traffic lights as well as prominent roundabouts.

At the police station, he found only the Munshi at his seat and called up the SSP and the DIG to the spot.

“The SSP has been put on notice and has been asked to inquire into the absence of policemen from duty and submit a report,” Jangveer said.

Sukhbir also decided to hold a meeting with senior police officials in the station.
“I will be taking feedback from the public on the functioning of the police and the administration,” Sukhbir is reported to have told the officers.
