Punjab deputy chief minister Sukhbir Singh Badal on Monday gave the nod for the mega expansion plan of Milkfed that, according to him, would usher in the second milk revolution in the state.

Reviewing the working of Milkfed, Sukhbir said his aim was to make Verka products as the largest selling brand of milk products in the country and that could be realised only by giving a big push to the expansion plan of Milkfed, besides increasing the procurement of milk two-fold.

He said the plan would focus on encouraging the dairy sector, setting up organised dairy farms, reorienting procurement of raw milk, scientific collection and chilling chain, ultra-modern milk processing facilities, value addition of milk products and effective marketing network to exploit Verka's brand image.

Approving the setting up of four mega milk plants of Rs 250 crore each in the state, Sukhbir said Punjab had to increase the processing capacity four-fold and these plants should be of international standards with ISO-9002 specifications.
