Suspecting his wife of infidelity, a 37-year-old man allegedly stabbed her, leaving her with grievous injuries, at their Sector-49 house on Wednesday.

The accused, Ajay Kumar alias Kala, stabbed Santosh (34) in the stomach, back, hand and leg. The incident took place around 10:30am, following which the accused informed the police, his father and neighbours about the incident. Meanwhile, the victim also sounded her sister.

The police reached the spot and arrested Ajay, while Santosh was rushed to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) where her condition is said to be critical.

Police claim to have recovered the knife used in the crime from the spot, and also confiscated mobile phones of both accused and victim.

Inspector Bhupinder Singh said Ajay suspected his wife of having illicit relations with someone, and conspired to kill her. On Wednesday morning, he asked his father to leave for their shop in Sector 32, and himself stayed back at home, he added.

Rajkumar, father of the accused, said Ajay and Santosh got married around 13 years ago, and had two children, who were at school when the incident took place.

Neighbours close to the couple said their relationship was strained for the past few months.

A case of voluntarily causing hurt (Section 323), attempt to murder (307) and act done by several persons in furtherance of common intention (34) has been registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at the Sector-31 police station.
