Suspended inspector general of Punjab police Gautam Cheema, who on Friday joined the investigation with the SAS Nagar police, was given a VIP treatment during the questioning.
The Punjab and Haryana high court had asked Cheema to join the investigation. Cheema has been accused of abducting a proclaimed offender besides outraging the modesty of a woman.
The local police gave him a VIP treatment at both the police stations. The cops deployed at the police station saluted the suspended IG on his arrival and served him juice during the investigation.
Cheema accompanied by advocate Sunit Sehgal reached the Phase 1 police station at SAS Nagar at 9.50 am. While entering the police station the suspended IG was wearing the shades. He also parked his SUV in front of the entrance. The cops then closed the gate of the police station and banned the entry of anyone.
SP (detective) Gursharandeep Grewal and SHO Pawan Kumar questioned him for around 50 minutes in connection with the case of abduction of proclaimed offender Sumedh Gulati, registered on August 30. While leaving the police station, IG Cheema said he was confident that justice would prevail.
At 10.45 am, Cheema joined the investigation at Mataur police station regarding the case of outraging the modesty of a woman.
There also, a similar treatment was provided to him as he was interrogated in the room of the SHO, where he was seated wearing shades in front of the investigating officers. SP (D) Grewal and SHO Rajiv Kumar questioned him for around 50 minutes. The case was registered on August 2.
In both cases, Cheema’s advocate had furnished a bail bond of Rs 1 lakh each.
Grewal, who is heading a special investigating team in both cases, refused to give the details.
