Members of the MC Safai Karamchari Union on Tuesday called off their strike after the municipal corporation agreed to their main demand of giving equal work charges to its 134 daily wagers as that of the staff of engineering department.

Garbage had piled up on roads and outside the sehaj safai kendras as 140 garbage disposal vehicles had been off the roads for the past one week due to the protest.

The sanitation workers will now resume work on Wednesday morning.

Union president Krishan Kumar Chadha said, “The strike has been called off as we got a letter from MC stating that they will give benefits to our employees and also agreed to fulfil other demands soon.”

Earlier, the protesters reached the MC office in Sector 17 and raised slogans against the civic body. Some of them even entered the assembly house through the media gallery, where the House meeting was on.

However, policemen managed to make them leave. Later, they held a meeting with MC commissioner Vivek Pratap Singh, who handed over the letter to them.

MC joint commissioner Rajeev Gupta said, “We have told them to clean the city within two days and they have assured us to do it.”
