Service-tax authorities have said that people who did not pay their tax dues between October 1, 2007, and December 31, 2012, can now declare them without inviting any action - including interest, penalty and other legal proceedings - if they do so before December 31, 2013.

The tax declaration has to be made in the prescribed format under the Service Tax Voluntary Compliance Encouragement Scheme, 2013.

Once the scheme is over, the service-tax authorities have warned of coming down heavily on defaulters.

Though the scheme was announced eight months ago, the number of assesses who have not complied with service tax laws are large in number. Till last week, the Chandigarh zone had received only 249 applications, disclosing Rs 36.61 crore, of which only Rs 2.86 crores have been deposited. In recent past, many cases of large amount of service-tax evasions have been detected in the Chandigarh zone.
