Teachers from region to celebrate Teachers' Day with President

On September 5 every year, national awards are given by the President with the aim of “raising prestige of teachers” and giving recognition to “meritorious services of outstanding teachers” working in primary, middle and secondary schools. Punjab

Dr Sukhveer Singh Bal, 50

School: Principal, Government Senior Secondary school, Khuian Srawar, Abohar

Category: Secondary teacher

Teaching experience: 24 years

Achievement: He has been selected for working to ensure girls’ education in border areas. He had also been credited with making a short film for creating awareness on voter enrolment which was exhibited in different schools through Edusat and led to good results. He established a book bank for science and commerce students to provide free reading material.


Gurinderjeet Kaur, 48

School: Principal, Government Girls Senior Secondary School, Nehru Garden, Jalandhar

Category: Secondary teacher

Teaching experience: 24 years

Achievement: She has been working towards improving the enrolment of the girls in higher education and had signed a deal with an NGO to sponsor education of students from very poor background and cannot afford education. She went an extra mile to counsel families to encourage girls to attend school.


Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, 42

Teaching experience: 18 years

Achievement: He has been working for inclusive education for children with special needs and opened a trust named Baba Nand Singh Education Trust associated with the school. He has also sponsored education of students from his own salary, besides making efforts to get children of various brick-kiln workers educated.


Manjit Kaur, 54

School: Lecturer, Economics, Senior Secondary School, Daulat Singh Wala, SAS Nagar

Category: Secondary teacher

Teaching experience: 30 years

Achievement: She worked for improving school infrastructure of her school. Due to her constant endeavours, the school has been able to provide furniture to all students from Classes 6-12. She has also been working to create awareness among people against drugs and female foeticide.

Hardev Singh, 55

Teaching experience: 32 years

Achievement: He has been giving coaching to poor children to make them selfreliant, besides working for enrolment of girl students in schools and reducing the number of school drop-outs. His efforts resulted in special permission to run special sessions of girls of the village in Classes 9-10, even when the school is up to Class 8 only.

Saudagar Singh Sarabha, 55

School: Physical Training Instructor (PTI), Government Middle School, Giaspura, Ludhiana

Category: Primary teacher

Teaching experience: 37 years

Achievement: Known for training students in sports, his students have brought glory with two of them having bagged gold medals at the national level. Owing to his efforts, the school, which had strength of 113 now has 445 students. He has been instrumental in motivating people to donate money. As a result, the school has a proper building, computers and an RO system.

Dr Lalit Manopati, 41

Achievement: He got constructed a stage in the school with Rs 95,000 from his own pocket, organised several rallies for spreading awareness about ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ and has also been making efforts for providing education to children living in brick kilns.

Achievement: Over past three years, his result was 100%. In his teaching career of 30 years, it has never been below 80%. He has been working to create awareness among people, in particular students, about environmental concerns and has published four books.

Achievement: She is getting the award for improvement in result and upkeep of school premises. Before she joined the school in December 2013, Class 10 result was 18%. Achievement: He is being given the award for giving guidance and counseling to poor and needy students. While his unique and interesting method of teaching has made him popular among students and parents, he also contributed to reducing the dropout rate in school.

Seema Malhotra, 47

School: Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 19, Chandigarh

Category: Secondary school teachers

Teaching experience: 22 years

Achievement: A chemistry teacher, her paper was selected for presentation at th National Teacher Science Congress at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) Varanasi in November 2011. She got appreciation for publishing two articles in abstract book of National Teacher Science Congress. She also conducted Adult Education classes as an instructor in a slum colony.
