Tempers run high at UIET ahead of PU elections
Tempers ran high when members of Students' Organization of Panjab University (SOPU) and Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) confronted each other during the campaigning at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) on the Sector 25 campus of the university on Tuesday.

The incident took place in the afternoon. Groups of both the parties entered into heated confrontation while campaigning for the upcoming Panjab University Campus Students Council (PUCSC) elections, which are scheduled for the first week of September.
More than 100 members of both the parties raised slogans against each other. Gauging the seriousness of the situation, the security staff of the university informed the police and a team of over 50 cops was pressed into service to disperse the students.
The police rounded up Robin Brar, Manoj Lubana alias Mauji, both of SOPU, Jeevanjot Singh and Sandeep Sharma, both members of PUSU, under preventive measures.
After the incident, the police have increased the deployed on the campus and the university security staff has been directed to be more vigilant to ensure smooth conduct of the student elections.
Dean Students Welfare (DSW) Prof Amrik Singh Ahluwalia said that the students have been advised not to move around in big groups to avoid such incidents. Ahluwalia said, "For the coming elections, we have made elaborate security arrangements with the help of local police."
