Three youngsters wanting to make it big in life, their existential dilemma interwoven with three favourite pastimes our country thrives on — cricket, films and politics — and adaptation of a best-selling novel by an award-winning director Abhishek Kapoor. Kai Po Che!, which hits theatres this Friday, has all this and is already garnering rave reviews after its premiere in Mumbai on Monday.
HT City catches up with Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh, two of the three lead actors in the film (Raj Kumar Yadav being the third), in city on Tuesday on a whirlwind tour to promote their film.
Sushant, the golden boy from Ekta Kapoor’s stable who made his television debut with Pavitra Rishta and became popular as Manav, commences the chat, “My character’s name in the film is Ishaan and he is a professional cricketer. Ishaan is ambitious but myopic; he is also very honest. The challenge in playing Ishaan was that there is a lot of contradiction in his character.”
On bagging the role, Sushant says, “I left Pavitra Rishta and wanted to head to the US for a filmmaking course but then I auditioned for this role and got selected. I loved the script so much that I dropped the idea of a film course.”
Sushant had to take training in cricket to play this character. “Some cricketers are good friends with Abhishek Kapoor and he got them to train me for some months, I am a professional cricket player now.”
While Amit Sadh, who was a Neena Gupta discovery on television and has done reality shows before bagging this film, says, “I went for the auditions and at that very moment the casting director noticed me. It was basically the chemistry among the three of us which got us on board.”
About his character, Amit says, “I essay the character of Omkar, who is a simple guy, he has his own set of ambitions but then he is greatly inspired by Ishaan and together they find a sense of direction.”
Talking about the adaptation of Chetan Bhagat’s best-selling novel, The Three Mistakes of My Life, Sushant avers, “The book inspired the film but the film will bring the book alive now; the screenplay is more streamlined in Kai Po Che!”
Amit adds, “Kai Po Che! is an emotional film and everyone who watches the film will have an instant connect because it portrays friendship very strongly.” The film also saw the actors get into some daredevilry when they had to jump off a 40-foot fort and straight into the sea. Nods Amit,
“The film had its own set of challenges and we had to physically and emotionally train ourselves to play the characters. At the end of it all, it was fun and exhilarating to dive deep into the sea, such moments make one feel closer to life.”
Sushant, who has already signed two films, says “I am doing Yash Raj Films’ next with Maneesh Sharma after which I will be on with Rajkumar Hirani’s P.K.” Amit is now looking forward to a vacation after the release of the film. “I am absolutely free after the film’s release and off for a vacation!” he says.
Sushant chips in, “I too am looking forward to wind up the shoot of Yash Raj’s next and fly off for a vacation with Ankita (Lokhande).” The actor is going steady with his Pavitra Rishta co-star.
