With the growing student population opting to stay in SAS Nagar, the town has become a new den for drug addicts and suppliers, a fact that came to light after police unearthed a drug bar with the arrest of three youths.
The trio was running a drug bar from a house in Phase 3A for the past about 18 months and had been supplying drugs to college students, who used to visit them regularly for their daily dose.
The CIA wing of SAS Nagar police, on a tip-off, raided the house and arrested three youths identified as Harjeet Singh, Tejinder Singh and Inderpal Singh. The police have recovered 30 gm of heroin and a Ford Fiesta from the accused.
A case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act has been registered against the three.
They were produced before the court from where they were remanded to three-day police custody on Saturday.
“The accused used to run a drug bar from the house for the past about 18 months. They used to source the contraband from various places in Punjab and would supply it to students living in the area,” said Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, senior superintendent of police.
Bhullar added that only Inderpal Singh among the accused was employed. “They were addicted to drugs and thus came in contact with each other. In order to earn quick money, the trio had started supplying drugs to students,” he added.
The accused largely supplied drugs to college students staying in SAS Nagar or Chandigarh, the SSP said.
The house from where the accused ran the drug bar was a disputed property and they were staying in it after the keys were supplied to them by one of the parties involved in the feud.
Seven others arrested
When the police team raided the house in Phase 3A, there were seven other youths present in the house who had allegedly consumed drugs. The police arrested all of them.
