The kisan bazaar, set up by the state government to improve the financial condition of farmers here, failed to take off despite being inaugurated three years ago by chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

An official of the Haryana State Marketing Board (HSMB) said on condition of anonymity that Hooda had decided set up a model where farmers could earn profits by selling their agriculture products without middlemen's involvement.

Despite being equipped with facilities like information on daily market rates, an information centre, pre-cooling & cold storage, grading & packing, weighing scales, plant health clinic and nursery, there was a lack of clarity in allotting shops to beneficiaries, said a woman official of department. She added that this was the reason behind the failure of the bazaar.

She said a few officials wanted the bazaar to be exclusively meant for farmers to sell their products, while a few others wanted the bazaar to be used for other purposes.

Superintendent engineer of HSMB, Satinder Ruhil, said though anyone could participate in the bidding after completing the formalities, it was aimed at farmers who could sell their products at prices set by them.
