An online web portal named 'SARATHI' for providing driver's licence in the district was launched on Friday by Anurag Aggarwal, secretary, transport, Punjab, for providing better and faster services to people.
Giving details, Aggarwal said online services would be launched in Patiala, Ropar, Mohali on September 8 and would later cover the whole state within 15 days.
Inaugurating the service under e-governance reforms launched by the state government, Aggarwal further said 30 to 40 computerised state-of-the-art driving test centres would be set up in big and small cities of Punjab. He said helpdesks would also be set up at these centres for people who are not computer savvy.
He further said in this online application, applicants could fill forms and particulars online and submitted forms on the portal. Once the online application was submitted, a unique reference number (URN) would be generated with the help of which applicants could check the status of forms online on the department's website- sarathi.nic.in or punjab transport.org.
Aggarwal said the transport department endeavoured to minimise harassment to the public by authorities regarding such transactions.
