The Debts Recovery Tribunal (DRT) on Friday directed the Chandigarh district magistrate and the senior superintendent of police (SSP) to help bank officials get physical possession of former Congress MLA Jassi Khangura’s Sector- 9 house for the recovery of Rs 20 crore against the loan taken by him for his Ludhiana-based Hotel Park Plaza.

The DRT also directed the authorities concerned to get the order executed within 15 days of its receipt and submit a report to this court. The next date of hearing is on December 17.

A Punjab and Sind Bank (PSB) officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said the former Qila Raipur MLA had taken loan in the name of his wife, Raman Khangura, in 2009 by mortgaging his Chandigarh house to the bank. After he failed to pay the loan, a case was initiated against Raman.

The officer said the bank had taken the litigation route to recover the amount due since 2010.

He said the bank officers had approached the district magistrate (DM) on July 16, 2014. The DM had directed the tehsildar concerned and the police authorities for taking necessary steps for possession of the house.

The order further stated that HS Sandhu, an advocate, had been deputed as the observer and local commissioner to get things executed properly.

Khangura’s counsel IS Ratta said they would appeal against the DRT order. Khangura could not be contacted despite repeated phone calls.
