Gurdeep Mehndi likes to call himself the ‘real’ son of sardar, and the ‘original’ turbaned hero to enter Bollywood. Son of singer Daler Mehndi, he will soon make his debut with the film Meri Shaadi Karao, a romantic comedy which will hit theatres early next year.
The 23-year-old is busy promoting his film, which will see him paired opposite newbie Radhika Ved from New Zealand. Being directed by Syyed Noor, the film revolves around a Punjabi family. And, it’s all in the reel and real family here. While Daler Mehndi has produced the film, Gurdeep has also sung and penned four songs for the film.
“Besides my dad and I, my mother has also acted in the film; she plays the heroine’s mother and my sister has also sung a song in the film,” says Gurdeep, all excited to be the ‘first’ turbaned hero in the 100 years of Hindi cinema.
He claims, “Actors with shorn hair don the turbaned look as it has become a fad these days, but I am the first original turbaned hero in a mainstream Hindi film. I was very clear that I will not sacrifice my identity to be a hero; my religious beliefs are of utmost importance to me. My turban is my identity and am proud of it.”
Gurdeep says that he had an inherent desire to be an actor right from childhood.
“I believe acting is in my blood, just like music; while my dad and Mika chachu (Mika Singh) are singers, I am the first actor in my family. Singing, I believe, is easier than acting because an actor needs to work on many things. I attended the Kishore Namit Kapoor acting classes for sometime in Mumbai and in those classes, all I did was observe other actors and brush up the finer points which make an actor,” says Gurdeep, who adds on a high note, “In 2013 Sikhs will rock Bollywood. My film is releasing in the first week of January, and then I am excited about Bhaag Milkha Bhaag where Farhan Akhtar dons the turnban.”
