Two daily wage earners were killed in their sleep on Sunday night as a man who was allegedly drunk ran his car over on a pavement.
The deceased have been identified as Ishaq Lal of Bihar and Deepak of Bada Guda village in Karnal district. Accused Babbar of Ganaur, Sonepat was arrested on the spot.
The police said that the victims were sleeping under the Nirmal Kutiya flyover on the National Highway 1.
Police said that Babbar was allegedly driving a White Maruti Swift vehicle at a high speed and he lost control over the vehicle. It climbed a pavement and crushed Deepak and Ishaq to death on the spot.
Eyewitness Raj Kumar said that Babbar and his friends tried to escape from the spot but they were overpowered by rickshaw pullers and other persons who gathered on the spot. Police also rushed to the spot and apprehended the accused.
The victims were rushed to the trauma center at the Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College, Karnal where they were pronounced dead on arrival.
Medical examination confirms that Babbar was under the influence of alcohol at the time of driving the vehicle. Police spokesman said that a case under sections 279 (rash driving), 304-A (causing death due to rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide) of the Indian Penal Code and section 185 (driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs) of the Motor Vehicles Act was registered against Babbar.
