The UT police are not sure if Sukhdev Singh and his aide, killed during an encounter with the Chandigarh crime branch team in Moga on Wednesday, were involved in the June 22 assault case for which the UT team was in Moga.

Assault victim Harpinder Singh has claimed there were five persons in all and he recognised only three of them. Of these, Gurcharan Singh alias Rinku and Khushwinder alias Sukhpal were arrested after they initially fled the encounter site on Wednesday. A third is named Shinder Singh, while two remain unidentified.

Sources in the Chandigarh police said the Punjab police were also not clear about the role of Sukhdev’s aide Gora, who was also killed in the encounter.

But, officials insisted that the gangsters opened fire first at the police team, probably mistaking them to be members of a rival gang. For not informing the Moga police before entering the area, the UT police said their team of eight cops needed no warrants or persmission as they were acting on a cognizable offence.
