Additional district and sessions judge, Shalini S Nagpal, on Tuesday convicted two persons, including a dismissed constable of the Punjab Police for possessing1-kg heroin.
The court will pronounce the quantum of sentence against convicts Balkar Singh, a dismissed constable of the Punjab Police and Parwinder Singh, a resident of Beas, Amritsar, on June 5.
On June 4, 2011, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) had arrested Balkar and Parwinder for possessing 1-kg heroin worth around `1 crore in the international market.
The NCB claimed that the accused had been coming from Jalandhar in a Punjab Roadways bus and the consignment was packed in a black bag. The consignment was to be delivered to two customers in Chandigarh. The customers, however, escaped.
The NCB had claimed that the consignment had come from Afghanistan and the arrests were made following mobile surveillance.
"We will file an appeal against the order. Both were falsely implicated and there were a number of loopholes in the prosecution theory. The independent witnesses were never examined. The prosecution even failed to prove conspiracy of any kind against Parwinder Singh," said defence counsel Inderjeet Bassi.
