A two-wheeler rider died after being hit by a speeding truck on in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Police said the 31-year-old victim, Prashant Kumar, a resident of Indira Colony in Manimajra, was hit by the truck near the colony number 5 traffic lights when he was returning home.
The victim was rushed to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Sector 32 by the police. Passersby informed the police after they noticed the victim lying in a pool of blood.
Prashant worked with a private firm in SAS Nagar.
The accused truck driver, Alwa Vishav Karma, a resident of Sector 26, was also arrested.
A case against under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the truck driver.
Rain, fallen fruit make road slippery, 5 hurt
In freak accidents, five two-wheeler riders were left injured with minor bruises. The road dividing Sector 20 and 21 had got slippery due to rain and fruit from the tree that had fallen off on the road. As a result, motorists, especially two-wheeler riders, tend to skid on the road. Among the injured were two women riders who fell after the tyre slipped on the road.
