Two youths killed, 5 injured as SUV collides with car on Zirakpur flyover

An 18-year-old resident of Silver City in Zirakpur and a 20-year-old engineering student were killed after a Pajero, driven by the 18-year-old, and a Hyundai i20 skidded to the other side of the divider after colliding on the Zirakpur flyover on Friday.

Five people were injured in the accident as three vehicles — an autorickshaw, a motorcycle and another i20 — coming on the other side of the divider were damaged in the accident.

The Pajero driver, identified as Mankirat Singh, 18, was tossed out of the car on the flyover and landed on the road below, resulting in his death on the spot.

Mankirat was a Class 11 student at a private school in Chandigarh and was on his way to Ambala from his house. His father, Surinder Singh, is the sarpanch of the Singapura village in SAS Nagar district.

The second victim, Bhupinder Thapa, 20, was a final year (BTech) student at the Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi.

A resident of Panchkula, Thapa was on his way back from college with his friend Mohit on a motorcycle and was riding it.

His head banged hit the Pajero, killing him instantly.

Investigation officer Hansraj Singh said, “The Pajero and i20 collided with a streetlight pole on the median, before crossing the divider and damaging three vehicles. The Pajero driver and a motorcyclist were killed. Five people have been injured,” he added.

“A case of rash driving has been registered against the unidentified Hyundai i20 driver, who ran away from the spot after the accident,” he added.

The injured have been identified as auto-rickshaw driver Amit Kumar, passengers Mohit Kumar, Pooja and an unidentified Nepalese man.

The auto was on its way to Elante Mall from VIP Road, Zirakpur. One of the injured, Amit has been admitted to GMCH-32, while others were shifted to PGI, Chandigarh, after being given firstaid at the Dera Bassi civil hospital.

Mani Saxena, a Patiala resident, who escaped unhurt and was driving i20 on his side of the road, said, “I was on my way to Chandigarh with my brother and sister. The accident was horrific.”

Traffic jam

After the accident, traffic on the stretch remained jammed for nearly an hour, as it took the cops more than two hours to remove the damaged vehicles and restore traffic.

Engineering student becomes victim

Bhupinder Thapa (20), was a final-year (BTech) student at Sri Sukhmani Institute of Engineering and Technology, Dera Bassi. A Panchkula resident, he was on his side of the divider and was ridimg a motorcycle with a friend riding pillion. His head hit the Pajero. He was declared brought dead at GMCH-32.
