Police said Shaukeen had been calling Salim, who tends to fruit orchards of former zila parishad president Virender Bhau, to enable him to talk to his daughter; but Salim kept making excuses.

As Shaukeen grew suspicious, he and his wife reached Khangesra and asked Salim about Tahira. It is further alleged that upon being pressed Salim admitted that he had killed and buried her in an orchard.

Shaukeen then lodged a complaint with the police, a case was registered and Salim was arrested. "The police got dug up the area on a cue from Salim, and found Tahira's mutilated body that appears 4-6 weeks old. Along with Salim, 3-4 people appear to be involved," said deputy commissioner of police Ashwin Shenvi.

"It is a suspected case of 'honour killing' as the girl was having an affair. We have to send the remains to Rohtak for post-mortem examination," said commissioner of police, Ambala-Panchkula, Rajbir Deswal.

Similar case ended in acquittal
The skeleton of Karnal resident Anju, 15, was found hanging from a tree in Morni forests on July 24, 2012. On August 10, 2012, the police claimed to have cracked the case with the arrest of her uncle Jasmer Singh and brother Aman Kumar. Later, the police also arrested Suraj Bhan, maternal uncle of the victim. As per the police, they strangulated the girl to death and hung her from the tree in May 2012 as she was having an affair. Later, all the accused got acquitted for lack of evidence and also because the girl's mother turned hostile.
