High drama was witnessed at a SAS Nagar district court on Monday when an undertrial produced a packet of smack before the additional civil judge. Aashish Saldi, alleging that drugs were easily available in jails. The undertrial, Dheeraj Batta, lodged in Nabha jail, under Sections 323 (hurting someone), 325 voluntarily causing grievous hurt and others alleged that drugs were easily available and that he was forced to buy it for 1,500.

The judge marked an inquiry into the incident and also accepted the application of the undertrial to shift his jail to Ropar. Batta also claimed that jail staff was also involved in the smuggling of drugs.

“One of the undertrials Harpreet Singh gave drugs to me to give to some clients when I came to appear in the district court. The DSP (prison) Dev Pal Singh is aware of the issue and is allowing the menace to go unchecked,” Batta alleged.

However, when contacted, Mataur SHO Naveen Pal Lehal said that a case had been registered against an inmate at the Nabha jail, Harpreet Singh under the NDPS Act on the complaint of Batta.

“We are investigating the role of the jail staff and if required a case will be registered,” he claimed.

When contacted, Dev Pal termed the allegations baseless and said: “Batta is known to quarrel with other jail inmates over petty issues. There is no truth to these allegations and I completely rebut these allegations.”
